I was expecting to have a problem that the bolt may snap and be left in the hole, fortunately this didn't happen, and the new alternator is to be collected tomorrow, likewise a new bolt.△ The tire producer/manufacturer of the tires you are buying is responsible for the recycling fee you are being charged.

The second set is here: or the full link is I'd recommend buying them both as the sizes are interleaved. This set is only half a set, the yellow strip next to the row of sockets conceals a second set of holes for the complimentary set. The thread was white with corrosion for a good 1/2 of its length and the hole in the aluminimum bracket is covered with hwhite crud too, see the photo.

Used an impact driver to fit it on the nut, still no rotation!!, and then a T-bar on the end of the socket.

No instructions on exactly how to use them, but I matched up the best size that would only just fit over the mangled bolt head. Prime delivery got them here in less than 24 hours, and on a Sunday (thank you Mr Amazon and DPD Courier). Was rather worried as by now the head was somewhat mangled, see the photo. Nothing moved it, so I thought I'd give these a go. Tried all of the other techniques except a acetelene torch (don't have one). Whoever had fitted it had rounded the corners of the bolt head, not a good start.

Steel and aluminium don't get on well, galvanic corrosion was holding them tight. Lower fixing is a Steel bolt into a tapped hole in aluminium bracket. I so wish I'd known about this tool years ago - marvellous and it'll save you so much time and trouble.ĭoes exactly what it says! I needed to remove the alternator of my Landrover Discover. Of course the sump plug was pretty chewed up, but about 20 minutes with a file gave me a serviceable hexagon to work with. I poked an old screwdriver through the hole in the top of the Irwin socket and whacked it on the ground - it came away fine. The only problem then was how to get the Irwin socket off the sump plug. It initially seemed too slack, but a quarter of a turn and it began to bite, and a 1/2 turn later the sump plug was rotating, perhaps for the first time in 15 years. I used the largest socket in the set, which was a 19mm provided with the expansion set. All I succeeded in doing was rounding off the sump plug and getting more and more frustrated.

Prior to using these tools I'd tried a normal spanner, and rather nice pipe spanner, an adjustable spanner (I needed leverage) and a Mole grips.

Fantastic tool - I bought the basic set and the expansion set as well to free up a 17mm sump plug that some "mechanic" had decided to torque up to something over 80Nm - yes, really.
